More than 10 years ago, during my psych degree, I took an optional in addiction and the most fascinating thing I learned was the effect of public bathrooms closure on overdose. It completely blew my mind. For those who aren't sure what I'm talking about, this is the tl;dr: closing spaces known for drug use causes a spike in overdose. This is because environmental cues affect the way you metabolise the drug. The bathroom becomes a safe space which is then removed. The user changes location and the same dose of hero¡ne they've used before could be an overdose.

My grandpa forgot he was alcoholic after his stroke. He was grumpy and always drunk, had a stroke and became the happiest guy and never mentioned a beer again.

This isn’t the same as forgetting, but I lucked out with my addiction. (not something you hear often) I was drinking daily, around a fifth of vodka, rum, or tequila every day. I even got to the point where I’d get the shakes if I went too long. Actual physical symptoms of addiction. So I kept drinking. Then throughout the course of maybe a month or two, I just… stopped? I didn’t even try to quit, it just happened to me? I’d like forget to drink. I didn’t have any memory loss or anything, just forgot to do it.

I have adhd I can feel so dependent on something to a point of consuming it day and evening thinking about it constantly then just lose interest in everything and start something new

That's exactly how I describe my ex husband, his life is like 50 first dates...just not really funny or cute 😐. He suffered brain damage after a brain surgery. He doesn't remember day to day, he only remembers up to about a year prior to his surgery. Depending on the day, I'm either his girlfriend, fiance, or wife. He has only remembered twice that we were separated before his surgery. I've found a good time of day for my daughter and I to visit him, but this was the outcome he feared so much.

A similar thing happened to my grandad where he had a stroke and then no longer wanted to smoke cigarettes. Not sure if that was memory loss or not. But yeah, just didn’t touch cigarettes again for the rest of his life. 🤷‍♀️

Thought I’d be the only one, but chiming in to say adhd helped me finally stop smoking. I allowed myself to have a cigarette for special occasions, but I’d either put it off to another time or forget. Eventually I was a non smoker. For a long time, I’d be like I should reward myself with a cigarette, but then I’d procrastinate and plan to do it later. (I’d have to buy them and I was always embarrassed to buy them).

YES. My grandfather was an alcoholic all of my life and I understand much longer. He has dementia, forgot he was an alcoholic and now he can have a singular drink.

Reminds me of "blind sight." That happens when the eyes still work, but the part of the brain that processes images is broken. People will catch balls thrown at them, move out of the way, etc. but have no idea why they did it.

Is some level of confabulation fairly common. I get the impression that people's memories aren't super reliable, but they can feel super reliable.

this would explain why I see ADHD clients be more successful at quitting alcohol/substances cold turkey than neurotypical clients
