@ask_clark: A package shows up at your door that you never ordered. Seems harmless, right? Not anymore. Scammers are mailing random, low-value items with one goal: 👉 Get you to scan the QR code inside. Once scanned, that code can: 🚨 Steal personal information 🚨 Send you to fake websites 🚨 Install malware on your phone 💡 On today's podcast, Clark Howard explains why this scam is spreading and the simple rule that can protect you: *If you receive an unexpected package, never scan the QR code.** Curiosity could cost you a lot more than the package is worth. #ScamAlert #CyberSecurity #ClarkHoward #QRCodeScam #ConsumerAlert

Scanning a QR code can't load a virus. All the QR code can do is direct your browser to a web site. What you do at that web site could possibly load the virus. Hopefully your virus detection software will alert you if the web site has malicious content.

Won't have to worry about this in, Belgium. We don't even get the packages we order for ourselves.

Are you saying the qr code not only takes you to a website bit also accesses the website and downloads this malware?

This is false. Malware can’t automatically be installed via a QR code on Android or iOS.

Thanks for spreading awareness about this. I got hit by a different shipping scam on eBay last month. I bought two hard drives for my store’s security system, about $700 total. The seller provided tracking numbers and both packages showed “Delivered” in my town. Problem was, nothing ever arrived. A USPS employee checked the internal tracking information and found the packages were not delivered to my address at all. They were redirected to a different address in the same ZIP code. Since the tracking only showed “Delivered” in my city, the seller used that as proof and eBay denied my claim twice. Be careful. A tracking number showing “Delivered” doesn’t always mean it was delivered to the correct address.

Scan a QR code doesn’t do anything. If you download something off of their website then that causes a problem and with an iPhone it probably won’t let you do it anyway

I just heard about this. It’s not only packages. It’s QR codes anywhere scammers are putting their own stickers over the QR codes and stealing your information.

I received 2. Both were from Amazon. No shipping invoice. Just addressed to me. 1 was a laser level. The other was an inflatable gymnastics mat.

I got a package. I didn’t order a few years ago. I don’t even recall seeing a QR code inside the box but I just called my credit card company and changed my card and kept what ever bullshit they sent.

I have an old iPhone with no service- I just use it as a wifi tablet. I removed all my banking information so even if I click on the website it won’t be able to get anything related to my banking.
