In the solar industry, experience is valuable, but engineering knowledge is what transforms experience into professional expertise. As solar installers, we must understand and apply key engineering principles such as bending moments, shear forces, axial forces, distributed loads, structural analysis, trigonometry, and material strength. These concepts are essential for designing safe, durable, and cost-effective solar mounting structures. Without understanding these principles, it becomes difficult to accurately determine load distribution, rack strength, tilt angles, and long-term structural reliability. This can lead to either overdesign, which increases costs, or underdesign, which compromises safety. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a skilled craftsman. In fact, craftsmen contribute significantly to the growth of our industry. However, for technicians and aspiring engineers who want to advance professionally, continuous education is essential. I often hear people say engineering education in Nigeria is poor. I disagree. The knowledge is available for those willing to learn, practice, and improve themselves. That is why I am also investing in my own development. I am currently studying at Kaduna State University to further advance my knowledge in renewable energy and engineering. Let's keep learning, improving, and raising the standard of the solar industry together. Engr.
