Except none of what you just said requires that piece of paper to happen. That's just a good partner, regardless of marriage status.

Except marriage isn’t a requirement for that. My boyfriend would do that for me in a heartbeat

That is called love and commitment. A piece of paper did not create that amazing dynamic. Not downplaying marriage if that is for you, but your relationship is not based on a piece of paper or a word. Much love

I agree that marriage is more than a piece of paper but that has nothing to do with marriage.

Sounds like you hit the jackpot. This is what marriage always needs to be. Helping each other in all things

That’s a relationship. Marriage itself is a piece of paper.

Just a piece of paper? Try being the one who holds him when he finds out his mom passed away. Making sure he is good while making the arrangements. And then, once it is all over, he held me while I mourned the loss of an amazing mother-in-law.

What does this have to do with paper? I’ve had partners and best friends who’ve done that for me.

I think the point is that all of those things should be done in ANY committed relationship with or without the paperwork.

When my wife and I were living in Washington (from Wisconsin) she got a call her grandma (who raised her and she was very close with) was nearing the end. I started packing up the car and what was needed, she looked at me confused. I told her we’re taking the dogs and what we need and going to drive to Wisconsin so you can be there for her and we can be there for you. We were there a month and a half, she got to have a few weeks with her grandma and say goodbye. We drove back when she was ready to.

See I’m married to my amazing partner but not legally because neither one of us wants to deal with paperwork at any point and we don’t need the government’s approval for our love and marriage

The piece of paper is important when you or your partner are in the hospital, filing taxes, etc- especially when children/dependents are involved
