I think it seems more like a “foot in the door” approach. At the beginning, the goal was to make technology appealing to the masses, if it seemed boring/dystopian from the start, there may have been resistance to adopt technology in general. Once we have become dependent in all aspects of life on tech, it gradually became more boring, because regardless of the “looks/appeal” we would be still relying on whatever technology that’s being produced. It’s no longer a choice, therefore, the aesthetic and visual appeal is no longer relevant to increase sales, it’s now based on necessity (and performance requirements).
