@brishantel6: It’s understandable to hope for immediate help, especially if work is becoming difficult for you. However, a therapist decision to wait before completing FMLA paperwork is often less about doubting the client and more about ensuring that their assessment is clinically justified and professionally defensible. A more realistic expectation is that the therapist may need additional sessions to complete your clinical assessment or collaboration with other treating providers before deciding whether they can support an FMLA request. #therapytiktok #blacktherapistoftiktok #socialworkersoftiktok #lcsw
Girl bye. It’s literally not that hard to fill out the paperwork. These jobs be sucking the life outta us.

So a patient comes to you with a chronic anxiety or depression issue that is causing them to miss work and they have exhausted all sick days and they’re job is at risk due to symptoms of their mental health, how long should they expect to wait for you to decide they need fmla?

I think people forget that you have a license and some things are not ethical.

No one is understanding that you can’t do FMLA out of a consult, there’s no actual diagnosis or treatment happening during that consult, it’s like an interview to see if you two would be a good patient/provider fit

I can’t tell you how many times I filled out paperwork (job requirements at the time) to be ghosted. Only came to get the paperwork. Felt really yucky to be used.

I never understood why doctors won’t just fill out the request for time off. Do y’all get in trouble or something? Like we all need a break sometimes. I was 8 months pregnant with swollen feet and aching back but my doctor refused my request until 9 months. I was so big and stressed out 🤣

I had to establish a solid relationship with multiple sessions with my psychiatrist in order for her to fill out my FMLA (which I’m thankful for). She was not playing!!! And I ultimately had to respect that!

Heavy on not jeopardizing my license and livelihood. The agency I work for requires at least 8 CONSECUTIVE sessions before anything is filled out. ESA, Housing Accommodations for college students, etc.

I’m so glad my Dr had no issues filling it out. It wasn’t a lot. I didn’t even finish before she was like girl, here’s my email send it immediately! Like doc, they haven’t even sent it to me yet. 😅 Hold up. I love them.

So how long would you need to approve FMLA? Because you can’t not communicate that and expect someone to not be frustrated

Crazy thing is I had a mental health provider for almost a year before I asked for help during a pretty difficult time. I was told she “doesn’t do that” and needed to find another provider. Hit this wall over and over until I gave up. Aren’t providers supposed to care for patients? Made sure to charge that insurance tho.

My beautiful pcp never met me before and signed my papers. She said corporate misogynistic America will make me feel guilty for needing time off, but she assured me I was right to do so.

For immediate sign off, your PCP can fill that out if it’s dire. For re-evals for continued time off, your therapist can then sign off. By then you should have had multiple sessions and a dx to help support. As therapist’s we are held to an intense ethical standard and comments below show people don’t understand that. I have to be able to speak to why you need fmla and a 15 minute consult from a mental health specialist would not suffice. The insurance companies I’ve worked with would have denied for sure.

Well, I was able to take FMLA without a single piece of paper being signed by a doctor. Stress leave should not require you to see a therapist.
