@thrivingwithhannah: A child for whom a classroom is a trigger should not be forced into a classroom no matter what it looks like, in the same way that no matter how “nice” an office is, I could never work in one. Again I applaud the changes and they will certainly help, but it’s still not giving equal access to opportunities for Neurodivergent or SEN kids in the way people think it is. #inclusiveeducation #inclusivedesign #accessibility #ukschools #classroomdecor
There seem to be a lot of people on TikTok with very strong opinions about education, what works and what doesn’t, yet many have never actually worked in a school. Quite often, they base their views solely on their own child’s experience, but every child is different, every family situation is different, and every school faces its own unique challenges.
In my experience, the vast majority of mainstream schools genuinely do their best to be inclusive and support all pupils. Unfortunately, no matter what schools do, there always seems to be someone ready to criticise.
I sometimes wish those who are most vocal would consider becoming school governors and helping to influence positive change from within, or even retraining as teachers themselves. They might then gain a better understanding of the realities and pressures of working in education, something that’s often far more challenging than it appears from the outside.

Schools are doing their best. Teachers have no money or resources. The government need to be held more accountable to properly fund the needs of all children. I hope people support teachers if they decide to strike over this next year.

While I agree with you, I feel like they’re doing the best they can with extremely limited funds and resources

I think its unfair to generalise - my classroom is very inclusive and all the children have what they need. yes it is difficult for them at times but they will go on to work in an environment that wont suit them all the time because thats life. not everything suits me but unfortunately life isn't going to suit everyone all of the time. teaching them to adjust is part of life, also teaching them to speak up and ask for whay they need means they need to learn what they need. that is also part of my job, working together in order to achieve success for all x

It’s Not inclusion it’s integration . Yes I’m a ta in a mainstream school and a mum to a neurodivergent child .

What do you want within the budget and staffing the school has. This is the best they can do with the resources they have. Increasing funding means increasing taxes to pay for it.

Agreed! The way mainstream school is with the little funding and the curriculum is not inclusive

Never gonna happen. Your requirements are something a SEN school can provide. State schools cannot provide this to the extent you expect. Schools are inclusive... what it looks like for you and them is different here.

Where would you like the children to be if not in a classroom? What would you like them to be doing if not following a curriculum with adjustments, genuinely curious

My audhd child has done amazing in a mainstream grammar school. With no Ta. Just reasonable adjustments. It’s not a one size fits all. That’s the issues.

This makes so much sense! This is why my daughter did not settle in mainstream! Sen school so much better, movement breaks , they go out into the community several times a week.

Im not aiming for maximum inclusivity. My school has zero recourses and I’m not doing all that for my own money and mental load. I recommend changing schools.

I think what’s really needed is more support staff in the classroom. Not just for sen children but for everyone. I think all children need more social interaction and understanding of needs. But this needs funds and a different approach to learning.
