Please my fellow Chinese 同胞, please watch the Teochew version. I’m not even from Teochew but this movie is like a raging bullet went right through my heart. The emotion is so powerful.

This was an incredible emotional movie which had me shed tears for the first time in a long while. It brought back vivid memories when I was 10 years old and I saw how my late father and uncles, who used to receive letters from our relatives in Teng Sua, listing the items they needed. My father and uncles would discussed and always pool their money together to buy and send those requested goods back. Those were the days of undying continuation of connection.
A 3rd generation Teochew from Kuching.

I am Teochew too. My grandfather came to Nanyang (南洋) at his youth. He earned enough to own a typical Nanyang style two-storey shophouse. Our family settled mostly in Indonesia, although my father was actually born in Malaysia. I remember my grandfather showing off his Teochew dictionary with 8 distinct tones, teaching me how to find my name in the dictionary 😁

Yes, my dad was from Chaozhou 潮安县。He is eldest in the family & in 1924 he came to Singapore (Sg) at age 16 working as a coolie, save money and sent home (to China) periodically to feed his mum (my grandma) and his 4 siblings. He married in Sg and after WW2 he brought my grandma and his siblings families to Sg. His whole life he worked very hard, very discipline & strict. He even self learn to read write speak Mandarin, English & Malay.

The success of Dear You shows that audiences value authentic stories rooted in family, culture, and identity. As a Singaporean Teochew filmmaker, this resonates deeply with me.
It reinforces my belief in projects like Rhapsody of Time, a Teochew short film that also explores early migrant from Chaoshan, their family, memory, and the passage of time. Authentic stories still matter.

I am a Teochew. I watched the Mandarin version in Xiamen recently with my wife who is a Hokkien. It is a touching movie and it makes me think of my grandparents when they travel to Nanyang during those days.
