 Long before LEDs and battery powered lights, pressurized lanterns like the Petromax could produce an astonishing amount of illumination using only kerosene and clever engineering. The process begins with the rapid heater, which creates a powerful blue flame beneath the generator tube. This preheats the metal components so liquid kerosene can be converted into a vapor before entering the burner. Once the generator is hot enough, the main valve is opened and vaporized fuel flows into the mantle. Instead of the flame itself providing most of the light, the mantle becomes incandescent and glows with an intense white brightness, turning the lantern into a highly efficient portable light source. just brilliant , got heaps of them and love restoring them and you don't get anything off the mantle as radioactive mantles are rare ,pity as they are a better light
