@kellytakesmedicine: A voicemail from him before he died. Thanks for listening and holding space for my grief - it’s just one of those days. 🤍 My grandfather took me in, no questions asked, and raised me. He was the first person I saw every morning. The one who stayed up when my asthma got bad. The last voice I heard every night. A father. A protector. A safe space. Watching him navigate the American healthcare system as a non-English speaking immigrant was an injustice that never left me. I promised that anyone like him under my watch would always have someone to go to bat for them. And when he died, I promised that no one should have to grieve alone. The truth is, I needed somewhere to put mine. So I chose geriatrics and palliative care. 💕 #medicine #physician #geriatrics #palliativecare #CapCut
As someone who speaks Cantonese myself, hearing his voice trembling with fear/concern while trying to not worry you and ask you how you are, making sure you're okay too😭
I'm so sorry for your loss doc.

I’m so sorry for your devastating loss! But it WILL make you an incredible physician and patient advocate. Just know, he’s with my momma, who is probably just hollering English at him (trying to make a friend) and talking all about her grandkids she wouldn’t ever see get older than 5 on earth. I hope he’s telling her all about you!

Respectfully did you sue? Cause that to me sounds like negligence from a doctor 😭😭

A quote that I heard recently: “Grief, I've learned, is really just love. It's all the love you want to give, but cannot. All of that unspent love gathers in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in the hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”

My parents are 87 & 91: NOTHING could have prepared me for how impatient and condescending their doctors have been. You will be the hugest blessing!!!

The sadness and anger I felt. The sweet immigrant elders is the only thing keeping me in healthcare because other than that I’m burnt out. Be the voice for those who don’t get heard. 💕💕💕

He poured all his love into you and now you get to share it with your patients. Each patient interaction will leave every person with a little bit of your grandpa. I hope you make time to grieve, and I hope you find peace in knowing how proud he’d be to know you’re caring for people the way he cared for you ♥️

I didn’t expect to cry and have this resonate with me so much esp as a PA who speaks canto and works in an area with primarily canto immigrants. Seeing firsthand the struggles that non English speaking immigrants face in navigating a system built against them made me vow to help them and be their advocate. I’ve been struggling to find my confidence as a new grad and this reminded me why I chose to go into medicine. Thank you for being their voice ❤️the world is better with you as a provider 🩺

As a child of an immigrant, we were forced to grow up quick because we had to translate conversations far more mature than our age. We didn’t have translation apps back then. I wonder how many people could have been saved had they been able to describe their symptoms and advocate for themselves. Hearing his trembling desperation in his voice describing his symptoms to you absolutely broke me. Yet he still checked up on you because he never wanted his last conversation with you to cause you fear. I KNOW you will save many lives and make an immeasurable impact on all your patients.
