In the same hand, she quite out of the ordinary holds a lotus flower, a symbol of rebirth, regeneration, and cosmic renewal. Together, these elements reflect Sekhmet’s dual nature — fierce protector and healing life-giver. But why are modt of the statues heavivlx damaged? Hundreds of Sekhmet statues once stood in the Mut precinct at Karnak, which helps explain why so many fragments survive. Some statues may have been deliberately damaged, but who did it remains unclear. Early Christians defaced images of Egyptian gods at other temples in the region, so they are one possibility, though the damage at Mut cannot be securely attributed to them. Natural weathering also took its toll.
