On June 28, 1997, a hiker inside Hempstead Lake State Park on Long Island, New York, made a horrifying discovery: the dismembered torso of an unidentified young woman wrapped inside a plastic bag. The only distinguishing feature left on her body was a highly specific tattoo of a bitten peach on her left breast. Months later, the skeletal remains of her two year old daughter were discovered wrapped in a blanket along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach. For nearly three decades, the tragic mother and child were known only to the world as "Peaches" and "Baby Doe," with many investigators fearing they were the early victims of the notorious Gilgo Beach serial killer. A massive breakthrough came in April 2025 when advanced genetic genealogy finally gave the victims their names back. "Peaches" was identified as 26 year old Gulf War Army veteran Tanya Denise Jackson, and her daughter was identified as Tatiana Marie Dykes. This genetic blueprint pointed detectives away from a serial killer and directly toward Tanya's former boyfriend and Tatiana's biological father, 66 year old retired Army veteran Andrew Dykes. As a former military instructor specializing in anatomy and physiology, prosecutors allege Dykes possessed the precise anatomical knowledge required to dismember Jackson's body. The case is officially solved after a dramatic cross country manhunt. In October 2024, undercover investigators tracking Dykes near his residence in Ruskin, Florida, watched him discard a plastic drinking cup and straw from a Charleys Cheesesteaks restaurant in Tampa. DNA extracted from that abandoned straw perfectly matched the genetic material left on Tanya's remains from 1997. On December 3, 2025, Dykes was arrested at his Florida home by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, extradited back to New York, and officially arraigned on charges of Second Degree Murder on December 18, 2025.
