In the US it is illegal to not allow employees to discuss pay. However, lots of employers have it in the handbook that you can’t. They’re just hoping that you won’t pursue filling a claim.

In Norway, all salarys are public, you can literally look up anyone's earning last year. You can also see who have checked out what you earn

i ALWAYS talk to coworkers about compensation. when I worked at Starbucks, I found out a woman who had been working there for three years was getting paid $3 less an hour than me when I only just started. she was able to ask for a raise which she deserved. I did get a talking to but it taught me to always ask. now I'm union and it's important for us to all talk our compensation and why we get paid the way we do.

the correct response at some point would have been "thank you for putting into writing that my compensation was affected as retaliation for having a legally protected conversation wirh a coworker about my salary." and then taking it to HR
