Pilot captains guide ships and boats in and out of ports and canals. They actually have to get on and off the ship by ladder, even in storms. There are some wild videos of them hanging off the ladder in heavy seas.

Cruise ships visiting our Great Lakes. It's funny to see them in the channel in lake St Clair. I only considered seeing cruise ships in the oceans, until I saw Viking with my own eyes. Pretty Cool 😎

The pilot boat is for a captain to run the ship down through the river not all captains are qualified to navigate the waters

the pilot helps them navigate shallow waters. they know the bottom of the body of water best and are used when ships dock too.

Pilot boats have been running through the saint clair river for as long as I can remember. I remember watching them while I was fishing down there as a boy with my father. I am fifty four years old
