After Germany launched Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, millions of German soldiers invaded Soviet territory. At first, Germany achieved rapid successes, capturing large areas of land and surrounding many Soviet troops. However, the Soviet people and army continued to resist. One of the most important turning points was the Battle of Stalingrad (1942–1943). Soviet forces surrounded and defeated the German Sixth Army, causing massive losses and ending Germany’s advance into southern Russia. Another key event was the Battle of Kursk in 1943, the largest tank battle in history. The Soviet victory there allowed the Red Army to begin a series of successful offensives.
