JEREMIAH MUTUA Diaries An objective oversight role requires leaders to go the extra mile in listening to and addressing the concerns of the people they represent. As the Minority Leader of the Kitui County Assembly, I was deeply concerned by the status of the Ward Administrator’s Office in Matinyani. Consequently, I paid a visit to the site accompanied by a team of 17 Members of the County Assembly. I have many friends in Matinyani, including the area MCA, Hon. Sylvester Kitheka Munyalo, and it was important for us to assess the situation firsthand. The structure, which was initiated in 2015 and has remained stalled and abandoned by the Executive for over a decade, paints a disturbing picture. Upon arrival, we found what can only be described as a skeleton of a building. The windows had been stolen, the roof was leaking, and the facility had been left to deteriorate. Inside, the offices that were meant to host government officials had been turned into drug dens and brothels. The rooms were littered with khat remnants, bhang remains, used condoms, and other waste materials. Some rooms had even been converted into toilets, with human waste covering the floors. To make matters worse, security lights that had recently been installed had also been vandalized and stolen. It is disappointing to see the Governor Malombe administration commissioning projects every Friday across various parts of the county, often accompanied by political rhetoric, while failing to complete long-stalled projects despite the availability of budgetary allocations. Many County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) appear to spend more time on radio and television platforms promoting themselves than delivering services to the people. A citizen-centered government prioritizes the completion of ongoing projects to ensure value for public money. I therefore call upon the Kitui County Government Cabinet to put politics aside and focus on service delivery. The people of Kitui deserve results, not endless promises. As we approach 2027, there will be an assessment of leadership performance, whether one seeks re-election or not. Citizens will demand answers. Leaders must listen to the people rather than pursue personal ambitions. You may choose to ignore or dismiss the concerns raised by the Kitui County Assembly, but the reality on the ground is that public confidence in this administration is steadily declining.
