Northern Europe has significantly lower bug pressure than the most of the U.S., especially the Eastern half. The humid and warm U.S. summers breed a nasty superbloom of insects.

This was normalized here by our national public health system at the time in response to insect-borne illness. We have done it ever since. Definitely an example of government shaping culture in a positive way

If only we in America could have your window shades that you have in Germany plus a window screen. Best of both worlds.

Dr. John Gorrie in Florida and Dr. Samuel Crumbine in Kansas encouraged window screens in the late 1800s because insects carried diseases

We also have door screens and garage door screens for the same reason. 👍

Screens keep out all kinds of bugs, birds and animals like snakes and small mammals.

They also keep about 50% of the sun off the windows, keeping the house cooler.

🦟 Youd think FL’s merciless mosquitos would’ve had Christopher Columbus BEGGING to surrender to the locals.

In the 19th century malaria was a serious problem in the U.S. When it was discovered that mosquitos spread disease, screens became standard.

I don’t understand why everybody doesn’t have screens on their windows. Fresh air without insects is wonderful.

I remember finding this out for the first time the hard way in Germany as a kid. Almost fell out of a window because of the way yours open. But you guys don’t have the bugs we have so I get the lack of screens… impossible with the mosquitoes in my area

Wow. That's interesting. I walk out the door and bugs are racing in. I wouldn't think of opening a window without a screen in it
