Northern Europe has significantly lower bug pressure than the most of the U.S., especially the Eastern half. The humid and warm U.S. summers breed a nasty superbloom of insects.

In the 19th century malaria was a serious problem in the U.S. When it was discovered that mosquitos spread disease, screens became standard.

I remember finding this out for the first time the hard way in Germany as a kid. Almost fell out of a window because of the way yours open. But you guys don’t have the bugs we have so I get the lack of screens… impossible with the mosquitoes in my area
