On August 9, 2005, he resigned as Finance Minister in protest against the withdrawal of Israeli settlements from the Gaza Strip . Leader of the Likud Party (1993–1999, and since 2005). From 2005 to 2009 and from 2021 to 2022, he was the Leader of the Opposition in the Knesset . From 1996 to 1999, he became Prime Minister of Israel for the first time, and in 2009, he began a second term. He served as the longest-serving Prime Minister in the country's history—15 years and 3 months—and resumed office in December 2022 [ 6 ] . In November 2022, he was re-elected as Prime Minister for a third term, where he was criticized for his attempt to carry out judicial reform and for the failure to prepare for the Hamas invasion (2023) .
