JUBA, South Sudan* – South Sudan’s telecom market may be about to get more competitive as Vivacell prepares to make a surprise return, 7 years after regulators suspended its operations in 2018. *What happened in 2018?* The National Communication Authority suspended Vivacell’s license over regulatory and financial compliance issues. Since then, MTN South Sudan and Zain South Sudan have dominated the market, leaving subscribers with limited options. *What’s changing now?* According to Insight Juba, Vivacell is set to re-enter the market. While full details on launch date, tariffs, and network coverage haven’t been released yet, the move signals a potential shake-up for data and call rates in Juba and beyond. *Why it matters for South Sudanese:* 1. *More competition* = Potentially cheaper bundles and call rates. When Zain and MTN compete, subscribers usually win. 2. *Network choice* = People in areas with weak coverage from one provider could get a better alternative. 3. *Jobs* = A returning operator means new jobs for customer care, sales agents, and technicians. *Public reaction* The news is already sparking debate online. Many South Sudanese who used Vivacell between 2010-2018 remember it for affordable SIM cards and promotions. Others are asking: “Will the network be stable this time?” and “Will they honor old SIM cards?” *The big question: Would you switch?* With MTN and Zain currently holding the market, Vivacell’s comeback depends on 3 things: network reliability, data prices, and customer service. If they get those right, a lot of people in Juba, Wau, Malakal and other towns might switch. For now, NCA and Vivacell haven’t shared an official launch date. We’ll keep you updated as details drop. *What do you think?* If Vivacell returns with cheaper data, would you switch from MTN or Zain? Drop your answer in the comments 👇
