@talkingcities: Those paths you see made by people walking have a name, they are called desire paths. Sometimes people just want to get somewhere as fast as possible #urbanplanning #urbandesign
Existence of a desire path is proof of bad design.

I just read through a development proposal where the developer used Strava data to find existing desire paths on the site and designed around it.
It wasn't something I'd ever seen before!

love this! i feel like design should always respond to us not the other way around.

People are a force of nature. You wouldn't tell a river where to flow.

I've heard that they similar to what water does, we find the most efficient path from A to B. It's a bit strange to me that urban planners don't know/care to plan for that from the start.

Or shortcuts! Every "desire" path is the shortest distance between two points.

The hospital where I work finally paved over a desire path, but they used cheap flagstone spaced too far apart. Now people walk in the grass next to it. 🤣

Such a good metaphor about life in general. We all create our own path rather follow a design that was created for us.

This one urban place had this aesthetic design path for people to walk on. But super inconvenient, so people started making their own desired path. The urban place then put bushes to stop the people from walking straight on their desired path.

I wonder if so called desire paths aren't just people being capricious and contrarian and also looking for the straightest route between two points.

That’s actually so cool, I’m an apartment manger and I see this on my property even though we have routes I just though people were being rude. Lol

The Dutch term is way more fun. We call them Olifantenpaadjes, translated as Elephant paths.
