@the_coaching_dad: This might sound harsh, but the honest answer is… not always. And that’s exactly why coaches need to be clear from the very beginning. Here’s the reality when tryouts, roster spots, or limited numbers are involved: 1. Last year’s spot doesn’t always guarantee this year’s spot. If a team has tryouts, families should know early that every season is a new evaluation. That conversation is uncomfortable, but surprises later are worse. 2. It’s not only about skill. Skill matters, of course. But coaches are also watching effort, attitude, attention, coachability, and whether that player helps the team grow. 3. Talent doesn’t cancel out bad habits. A kid can be talented, but if they don’t listen, don’t work hard, bring negative energy, or make practice harder for everyone else… that matters. 4. Coaches need to communicate expectations early. You can’t move the goalposts behind the scenes. Tell families what you value, what you’re watching for, and what players need to do to earn their spot. 5. Parents: not making the team doesn’t mean your child failed. It may just mean this team, this season, or this situation wasn’t the right fit. Help them learn from it, grow through it, and keep loving the game. 👉 Follow The Coaching Dad for more insights built to help volunteer parent coaches. #ParentCoach #youthsportsparents #youthsports #sportsparents #CoachingKids

definitely a no, but it's awkward when tryouts are 3 days after the season ends

As a parent of a kid that was just released from his team, expectations need to be set. We were told for years they wanted to keep a team together and develop them together. We were told they cared about development over wins. All bs

depends on the travel program and the expectations they set up front. parents should be told there will be tryouts every year to avoid any confusion or issues.

I completely agree. As a sport performance (strength and conditioning) and sport psych/mental performance coach, I see first hand how much an athlete can improve from season to season. There is also the Relative Age Effect or what some people call "late bloomers."

What about the assistant coaches who bring the negativity but their kid is good? We got two of those. Which is why we (I’m the 4th coach) is moving on.

It all depends on the philosophy of the team. If they want to be highly competitive with the goal of “A” ball, I totally agree. Notice I didn’t say anything about winning? A team should be made up of kids and parents with the same level of commitment and good talent. If you have commitment and development of talent, wins will come and the team environment will be great.

There is a vice to that also.. I’ve seen coaches carry certain players over to the next season based on being on the team the previous year., they may even have a good team attitude and they hustle yet there in many cases are better players within their own class speaking of high school sports… other players that are better and did not make the team when it is obvious that they far exceed the players that should have been cut… whether they are simply more popular among their teammates or whatever the reason…this is not good objective coaching.. it has more to do with the coaches being insubordinate emotionally…

Letting people go for effort and attitude feels right. Cutting before full skill development efforts from coach when you saw enough in them to be on the team in the first place is a little rough. But there’s those top teams who will cut quick. Different culture I guess

they need to develop & earn it each year. skill AND the will to play are important in building a solid team. as are rhe intangible skills. too many times I would see the team already made before tryouts are even finished. bad for long term development

The tryout is the season for players on the team. I think coaches should be open and honest with players and families before tryouts.

If there’s tryouts, no one spot is secured. We have a junior soccer program that goes to tryouts at 11u. We had 50 kids in the juniors program from 5-10. we got to public, We had 118 kids. Those 50 kids that have been playing with us since they were five years old are not guaranteed to spot on 11u rosters, the tryout decides all of it.

Depends on age. 8-12 absolutely. It’s about developing them at that point. After 12, then it’s not always.
