My gut is telling me she lied to OP about her reasoning because she took too long to answer and had to be interrogated by OP. Where she did answer, it sounded like something I would’ve came up with as a teenager, it’s definitely a very flimsy reasoning and like I said the way she had to interrogate it out of her just means that the ex friend was taking the time to come up with a “plausible” story, in lieu of the truth.
