I feel like Astarion is the like, the empathy test character, because since he isn't directly connected to the main plot it's kinda, "How much are you willing to stick your neck out for somebody that you aren't sure would do the same for you" depending on your relationship with him ofc.

I'm pretty sure he is still on the run/hiding from Cazador in this situation. Very paranoid. It's how he is able to come to the party, risking exposure but desperate for the player's help in finally taking Cazador down.

He's on the run, he isn't under Cazador's control until Cazador is able to get close enough to command him. My 4th evil run I didn't complete any of the companions story quests as part of the evil. I called it my apathy play through

My first full playthrough, I accidentally found the Cazador quest, I was just fucking around on the wall, trying to figure out just how high in Baldur’s Gate I could get. I didn’t realize it was the way into the manor, didn’t realize Astarion had be kidnapped, didn’t realize the Gur had anything to do with it, didn’t realize they were vampires until I made it down. It was fun. lol

So, I kinda ignored Astarion’s quest line my first playthough. I just keep him around to pick locks, so after you defeat the nether brain, his sunlight immunity wears off and he scurries back to the shadows. Back at the reunion camp you can talk to him and he’s pretty much still hiding from cazador. Cazador apparently needs to find him again before astarions under his control
