My daughter was simply not allowed to have social media, as a PARENT, her access was restricted. She did not have a phone with a plan until she was 12, and that was because I needed to see her on GPS while she was walking to and from school. Then at 14, she wanted IG and I allowed it, but I had her password and I monitored anything she accessed as well as her search history. Active parenting is the answer. Now she’s 20, she has a tight knit peer group, and keeps her information private. She talks to me about things she sees.. as she has always done. Teach your kids, protect your kids.. we don’t need a government to do that for us. The biggest take away though, TALK to your kids and make sure they know they can talk to YOU!

As a parent in Australia, the under 16 social media ban is great. It makes parenting easier, there is no social pressure for the kids to be on it. Yes, some kids get around it, but most don't and it is no longer the standard way they communicate so those not on it don't miss out. The ban is great.

This is the equivalent of parents in the 80's banning their children from television because there might be scary movies in there. The internet is the new media of you don't help them use it responsibly they will be at a horrible disadvantage when they reach adulthood and do not understand how it works

I have a 15 year old and 11 year old and a 9 month old and even my oldest child does not have a phone because I don't believe he's mature enough to have one. It's the parents' responsibility to make sure that their child is in on inappropriate websites or apps.

They’ve just announced the ban for under 16s in the UK. I have an autistic daughter this is where she finds her special focuses and regulates herself. Also my eldest has just done her GCSE’s. Social media was so beneficial for revision. PS I love your videos. You’re brilliant 💕

As a parent of a tween I look forward to this. I don’t think it’s going to solve the problem but I’m caught between letting her have it and withholding it from her. I spoke to her about this and she said all her friends have it and she would be left out if she didn’t. I only allow her to have Snapchat but I still don’t like it. She also isn’t allowed on YouTube, discord etc. she does have Roblox to play with friends. Again, with all her friends playing on Roblox and talking over snap I just worry about isolating her. I remember always being on the phone but now kids don’t sit on the phone and ICQ. They chat through snap and play Roblox. But I sat with her and went over the pros and cons and we had an agreement of only allowing friends etc. but I’m sure she is still being negatively influenced by it. I just think it may be easier for parents to discourage it if it’s not legally allowed. Open to any thoughts or suggestions. I work with kids as well and I just think if we know it causes harm I think we need to do something to discourage it. Just like we do with smoking and alcohol and we should possibly do with energy drinks. I agree with education but as we know teachers can teach all they want and kids will still do it. For example: smoking, drugs and drinking.

Australian here. It's not working and not going to work with the amount of technology available to circumvent it. Government agencies need to focus on education around health use of Social Media and the internet. Parents need to be involved and informed about the things their children are accessing online.

As an adult who grew up as the internet evolved from bulletin boards to what it is now the problem is now social media, the problem is unfiltered and unrestricted access to the internet. If the government really wants to solve the problem they would have a government funded web content filter. Parents create an account and set the filters, then opt in their devices.

Oh, well said, well said. When you’ve finished educating your government in Canada, would you be kind enough to come and similarly educate the government here in the UK, which has just announced a similar ban intended to take effect sometime early next year…

I decided to allow my son to go on social media when he was 12…the rule for many of the apps was a minimum of 13 and so we absolutely just lied about his age🤷🏻♀️

I teach in BC and this year I got to design my own curriculum on AI and internet safety with students k-6 and it was actually very powerful and impactful to them, most engaged I had seen a lot of them too
