There's a movie called "Maléna" starring Monica Bellucci that takes place in Italy during the last years of the second world war. It is both a beautiful and tragic movie that includes an intense scene depicting the local townspeople "shearing the collaborators" and chasing them out of the town when the war was over. It was a violent and dehumanizing act of postwar vengeance.

This piece of history is hard to take. They spend the time under Vichy France under control of Nazi Germany doing this just so their kids could eat or they were members of the French resistance. They thought that they could go back to having a normal life after the war.

They collaborated with the Nazi regime, some served as guards in extermination camps, were accomplices of the Nazi regime, some committed serious crimes against humanity. Cutting hair is a humiliation, but it does not compare to the crimes they committed against other people
