If you’re feeling this way already during the training process, you need to wash this dog and start over. It’s OK if this dog doesn’t love service work and it’s OK for you to start the journey over again!

my best advice would be to get a trainer to help you. I know it can be expensive, but having someone to guide you through these struggles and see what you don’t see helps SO much. I promise. I struggled a lot and I don’t know what i’d do without my trainer helping me learn the best way to work with my dog. I’m so sorry, I know how you feel.

My SDiT is her age. Just turned one. This is SO NORMAL at 12 months. Take a step back, maybe stop bringing her to work for now. My boy is only in pet friendly public for 30 minutes tops. Working a full day like that is a lot for a puppy. Trust me I understand how discouraging this can be sometimes. Mine makes me cry at least once a week. You’re doing great ❤️

12 months is very young to be coming to work. For the first two years outings should really be focused on training and helping the dog be successful without a lot of expectation. I would never recommend a dog come to work with a handler until at least two years of age unless it’s very short days where you can focus on her. There’s a rampant issue in this community of rushing puppies. Go back to your foundation. Focus on fun, low expectation outings and she will be just fine!!!

You are not alone! Feeling like your failing when your training and putting in the work everyday and then your service dog makes a mistake makes you want to feel like your not valid or your having imposter syndrome feeling like your dog is “fake”. I would train around more smaller children and louder children and practice being around them, also possibly alerting to the little girl! My boy didn’t bark but did whine towards my diabetic infusion nurse when she had severe low blood sugar! Also remember dogs aren’t robots all you can do is work through it and apologize and train for the future!

Girl I feel you, some days you’re like what is happening you’re not helping dog. But i think it’s important to always remember a service dog is in your tool box and not every tool helps every time. Bad/off days happen. Redirect and try again 🤍🤍🤍 you guys got this. Not every day is perfect but yall are a team, just keep training

oh how i wish i could give you a hug bc you in this video was me with my first SD. service dogs make mistakes- it’s OKAY. she’s in training. It’s possible long days at work *might* be too much for her right now- that’s ok!!! Please contact a professional, well known service dog trainer. And remind yourself, in order to be a good service dog, they HAVE to be a dog too. My current service dog is 2 years old and does limited public access, doesn’t come to work with me (i work in healthcare, i’d rather use other accommodations than bring her) and she gets sooo much time to just be a dog. and when it comes to her job / tasking - she LOVES it and is so freaking good at it bc i prioritize her living her best life THEN her being a service dog. take a step back, take a deep breath, and feel free to reach out if you need to talk ♥️

Maybe it’s time to take a step back on training and go back to the basics for a little bit to see if she needs a break. I had to stop working my boy for about 6 months and now he’s getting better than ever all because he was trying to tell me I was forcing him to do too much too soon

If she’s young it’s expected. Young dogs are in training for a reason. Constantly wondering if our dogs are helping and are where they’re supposed to be is part of our job. We have to hold our dogs to a high standard and stressing about it is normal. I stress about my dog constantly. I constantly feel like I’m a terrible handler and he isn’t going to be cut out for service work even though he shows promising signs. Mine is a little over a year and a half old. He’s still a lot. When he was about a year old we had an issue of him thinking g he could demand bark at people. He has been pulled from PA and reevaluated for service work 3 times now. He hasn’t been working for about 3 months now because he can’t calm tf down. We’ve had to go back to settling, neutrality training, etc. because I don’t think he can handle working right now. It’s hard but the best thing you can do is to just keep training on the things that are hard and it’ll get better.

Hey, first off it happens. They are dogs at the end of the day. I would take a look at what work days look for yall. Do you do enrichment before work, make time or ask for accommodations to have enrichment or dog breaks during work and what does her week look like? I have a 14month old lab and on 4, 10hour shifts in a row, she has ample time to be a dog before, during and after work. It’s hard for young dogs to “work” a full day with you. Know that she’s still in training and although frustrating or embarrassing, you two will get through this ❤️feel free to message me if you just want to talk it out
