Betelgeuse is actually a red dwarf and a lot closer than estimated. It's why it's size fluctuates so significantly depending on where we are in our orbit relative to it when taking measurements. The closer we are the bigger it is. It's also why every time they measure it's distance it fluctuates so much. They're measuring it under the assumption that it's a red giant.
