I feel like classes & community service as a more common consequence would do soooo much more for so many. we expect people to learn from mistakes but never do anything that would actually give them the tools to improve smh

I still think this thought process is outside of being an abolitionist. The word consequence though can be positive or negative it is usually associated with negative, so it tends to be associated with punishment.

I’m of the opinion that most incarceration can be done via house arrest at their own home with them being permitted to work and go to medical appointments via supervised transport, wet don’t need actual prisons unless someone is dedicated to causing harm and has stated they don’t intend to stop causing harm.

Please, look into the courtroom testimony and police report. None of it helps any kind of self defense case when yo look at it all together

Sometimes the investigation is the consequence. I think folks have consequence and punishment conflated. Action should def be taken in response to something like a death happening + preventative measures against future incidence (consequences) and that process should decide if further punishment is warranted.

Really shocking and disappointing to see you double down multiple times on things that have been largely debunked. There was no assault he was defending himself from. Multiple witnesses have testified to that. His defence never even attempted to explain what he was doing bringing a knife to a track event in the first place. Stabbing someone in the heart because you were having an argument and then they shoved you is a crazy escalation of violence and if it had been a black boy that had been killed or a white boy doing the killing, you would be calling this what it is. Murder. Maybe not first degree but I don't know anyone who takes a knife into public and doesn't at least consider that it may cause a fatal injury if they use it.

You cannot use lethal force against a non lethal threat. That's a pretty standard doctrine across most states.

I agree with prisons need changed. Especially as we have a school to prison pipeline along with a foster care to prison pipeline - which I can go deep into as I have wrote a research paper on each, and both pipelines disproportionately represent minorities (Prison is today’s slavery - another topic we can discuss), but we are not going to claim self defense. No. I’m sorry. I’m a social worker who regularly advocates for changes, minorities, society, etc, and works in child welfare - the HARDEST form of social worker, but stabbing someone when you have the very real ability to walk away, is not self defense. And we are not going to claim that. Thats why there is a threshold. It has to be reasonable. Stabbing someone who is being racist towards you is not one. That’s like when a person walks on your property yelling at you and instead of doing anything else like going inside, walking away, calling the police, etc, the first reaction is to grab a gun and shoot them and claim self-defense, etc. They don’t win those cases and typically do not get to claim self-defense as the reaction far surpassed the reaction a normal person should have in a situation. That is how self-defense works.

Nobody wants to take mental health into consideration whenever it comes to the prison system. we know for a fact, and have evidence that prison does not rehabilitate the majority of people that go into it. of course we should not be teaching children that violence is the answer. However, we can’t just say that just when they do it. We have to show them that….. these children are growing up and states where they’re being taught that they are allowed to “stand in their ground” even if someone just says something to them…. and then when they do it, they are called murderers….

So you think necropheliac and serial unaliver Ted Bundy deserved “rehabilitation”? You believe Jeffrey dahmer, cannibal and serial unaliver, could be “rehabilitated”? You believe whoever unalived the “west Memphis 3” children deserves rehabilitation? It’s clear it was probably the stepfather of one of the boys. Violent crime that unalived someone deserves prison. Non violent crime, absolutely doesn’t deserve prison.

genuine question: my boyfriend was murdered by a neo-nazi because he was gay and jewish. if the state didn’t impose a punishment of some type, i do worry my grief would cause me to act out. i do not believe that prison is a good result for a lot of cases, but how do you ensure that victims don’t become future perpetrators? ignoring them will create a crime problem. happy to hear your thoughts.
