The Pontic Greeks, whose variant of ancient greek evolved differently from mainland greek, still pronounce the η as ε. Example τηρώ is pronounced as τερώ, το ημέτερον is pronounced τ' εμέτερον.

Hahaha, Babiniotis, an actual authority on Greek, ancient and modern, taught generations of Greek linguists, philologists, historians etc at the University of Athens pretty much what you say in your lovely broadcasts! Babiniotis was the first I heard talking about long and short e, as a first year student back in the 1980s... You are so right, my friend!
