everyone's chronically online and are burnt out from work or school, and third spaces are harder to find. however, I do think people are becoming more aware of this and I'm seeing a resurgence of social spaces

Exactly. Third spaces have basically diminished to nearly non-existence in our current time/era. therefore making friends.. particularly making long term friends is something that has become fraught with misunderstandings and a lack of grace and context in most cases.

The internet adds a layer of danger that makes it hard for people to connect I feel. Also, no one wants to talk IRL (or on the phone). I honestly feel people are scared of intimacy (non-romantic or romantic).

Making friends as an adult is hard because you don’t have those built in environments anymore like school or sports. Everyone has jobs, families, and responsibilities. A lot of people want new friends but nobody wants to make the first move. Everyone is at different stages at life too. Plus, as you get older you’re looking for real connections, not just someone to hang around with. I think another issue of many , is people mistake length of knowing someone for quality of friendship. It’s harder now because people don’t wana grow or update their way of friend making.

I've met and befriended like 10 men in the last 6 months or so at the gym. we see each other regularly and could easily link up however the gym is where we socialize... some people link up at the bar. we link up in the gym 💪🏾
