@samheinelouisville: For thousands of years, people lived through brutally hot summers without the luxury of air conditioning 🥵🪭 So how did they do it?? Turns out, many older homes weren't just built to look beautiful - they were literally designed to BREATHE and stay cool during the warmer months. From wraparound porches to soaring ceilings and carefully placed windows - the HOUSE ITSELF was the air conditioning ❄️🏡
They also had no cars, more trees, no blacktop, less or no concrete.

My grandmother did not have air conditioning. On hot days, all of the windows would be opened early in the morning, and then they were closed, with the shades on the sunny side closed, until the evening.

I grew up in a home and it was built in the 1870s. without air conditioning. it was vastly more comfortable in the summer heat than the 1960s home I moved into afterwards.

I don’t have air conditioning now. I’ve never owned a house with air-conditioning. I just suffer through with some strategically placed fans.

Didn’t have summers that lasted as long, weren’t as hot for as long. It has changed a LOT. Many states now averages 10*F hotter than 40 yrs ago overall summer trends.

I also feel like they get used to it. I used to work at a summer festival where we cooked food in what’s basically a shed with no AC and just one giant window. Eventually I just got used to it to the point where stepping out in the 90+ degree heat felt cool to me. The more years I worked it the more used to it I became. It sucked though lmao

We had an attic fan before my parents could afford to install an HVAC. We lived in South Texas so it was pretty hot but we were just used to it.

We opened windows at night and closed come morning. Planted a tree to block sun on the front porch. Light colored roof.
