Let me know if you guys want more of these! I have an excessively long thesis re: gendered / cultural body studies in medieval and early modern Europe to pull from. (If it’s boring, also let me know and I’ll knock it off lol)

I would gladly listen to a whole series of 2+ hour podcasts about female mystics of the past if you made one.

Absolutely fascinating. A weird detail that struck me was that ice skating was a common activity! For some reason that feels so anachronistic, but when you think on it, makes complete sense.

I so much appreciate how much nuance you bring to these discussions. You never dismiss the women themselves as victims or self deluding, you honor their agency, but you also never ignore the larger contexts that govern their expression of agency. You are an excellent public scholar

Ok, hopefully this is appropriate and I know historical diagnoses are tricky, but are there any theories on what her condition was? Was it caused by ice skating or could it have potentially been a preexisting condition that was exacerbated

I suffer with Scleroderma and Myositis and a long list of physical troubles. My mother had the same thing and I was her primary caregiver at the end. I was diagnosed 5 years after she passed. She was the greatest gift giver. I am active in rare disease advocacy and try to help newly diagnosed folks when I can. This story is so thought provoking and I want to learn more about Ludwina and hear more stories like this! The psychology is absolutely fascinating.

Seriously, really great. The thing that makes your content so unique is that you go between what happened and how it came to be culturally so fluidly.

Thank you. I had never heard of her. She's facinating. Thank you also for being vulnerable and sharing your experience with disordered eating. the line about familiar mirrors reflecting back across centuries was beautiful as well

This is so interesting! Love the parallels to modern conversations too. I first learned of this general concept from a medieval literature class (eng ed major) in college and the women who served in roles like this for their community is fascinating
