@bymuseum: Gardening on Sunday (1961) By John Falter Published for The Saturday Evening Post Some paintings look simple until you realize they are asking a harder question. John Falter’s Gardening on Sunday looks like a funny illustration about lawn care, but it is really about two different ways of living. One homeowner stands outside his pink house trimming a perfect hedge. His lawn is clean, his birdbath shines, and everything on his side of the property looks controlled. Next door, everything is messy. The grass is overgrown, toys are scattered everywhere, a dog sleeps in the weeds, and the homeowner is asleep on the porch with a newspaper over his face. At first, it looks like a simple contrast between responsibility and laziness. But the man with the perfect yard is still working on his day off. His perfection requires constant maintenance. The messy neighbor may not have the better-looking yard, but he has rest. That is the real meaning of the image. Falter is not only comparing order and disorder. He is asking whether perfection is worth it if it costs your peace. The question is not which yard looks better. It is which life looks better. 👉 Follow @bymuseum for vivid stories and hidden meanings in classical art.

one is retired, his kids are adults, for him, every day of the week is a Sunday, he has time to care for his garden, and he enjoys it, it gives him something to do. The other man is young, has young children, probably works hard at the factory, his Sunday is his resting day.

this portrait is subjective... The bottomline is, do what makes you feel happy, do what makes you feel more alive, do what makes you feel more peaceful,. just do what you love regardless

or maybe... he's happy with what he's doing. so in a way, that's his idea of rest

I think they are both equally happy. Most adults don’t do things unless they truly want to. I like keeping a tidy, well appointed home. It’s fun for me. Others don’t and that’s fine too.

maybe the man on the left is the one living his best life, that's his idea of relaxation and fun. maybe the one on the right is also living his life to the fullest. to each their own

they both could be living their best life. if the guy on the left enjoys "perfecting" his lawn, who are we to brand his hobby as "work"?
my conclusion is, peopke rrally can assume a lot of things based on a glimpse of one's life

I refuse to fall for the bs that the lazier the happier. this isn't just Sunday's work on the left. regard for your environment is regard for self and gratitude and care for the gifts and privileges you have. I think the painting is presenting two choices and the reality of either choice. the judgment of value depends on the viewer

The dirty side would stress the fxck out of me! My yard isn’t perfect but I prefer the tidy side.. mine’s riddled with autumn leaves 🍂 right now - which I actually love to see ❤️

The first man isn’t working on Sunday, he’s enjoying his hobby. And during the week, he gets to enjoy the beautiful yard he created.
The other man is resting on Sunday, but to me, he’s just putting off a chore that he knows he’ll have to deal with every time he comes home.
