So um.. I work in insurance in nz, specifically we deal with visitors to nz and you are absolutely going to get a bill. Maybe for between 2-5k if i had to guess. The drs don't know the cost (or care) because it's not THEM charging you... or overcharging you as it is in the USA, its the district health board that need payment. Can take 2 weeks for the bill to be raised. If you have no insurance, they'll set up a payment plan. The only time it's for real free for a non tax paying patient is if it's under ACC. We dont pay more tax than US :) - the highest tax rate here is 39% and thats if you are earning more than 180k a year

we pay an ACC levy here its already included in out tax so you dont even notice it. which covers hospital care

unless you're on a 2 or more year work visa/nz resident or nz citizen or part of a reciprocal health agreement (Australia and UK) then you will get charged. (unless it's covered by acc).

Unless you have a work visa/permanent residency etc you should have been billed. That's one of the ways the health system gets funding

I've been in Hospital so many times and 1 stay was 3 weeks and now have to go for major Surgery. all this is free. thanks to New Zealand health care

Yeah hospitals are free unless you go to an after hour care then they charge anywhere between $60-$130 but you get seen faster since it’s not public

Yep and it’s actually cheaper to have a public health system rather than a privatised system. All that money you’re paying goes to corporations. Here it goes to actual health care.

If you were to get a knee replacement or a reconstruction on your spine and stuff like that, that costs money. Some practices you have to pay per visit, but the big money would be for intense surgery.

Most people would pay 17.5% to 30-33% for tax in NZ. Tax is probably less in the US but like you said, the cost for private health insurance is beyond so likely is comparable!
