The right coronary artery runs mainly along the right side of the heart, while the left coronary artery quickly divides into major branches such as the LAD and circumflex artery, supplying the powerful left ventricle and large areas of the heart muscle. These vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients to the myocardium so the heart can keep beating nonstop. A fascinating detail: the heart muscle receives much of its blood supply during diastole, when the heart relaxes, not mainly while it squeezes. After feeding the heart muscle, most venous blood drains into the coronary sinus, which empties into the right atrium. Small vessels on the outside — massive importance on the inside.
