You know, Japan has many amazing places to see early summer hydrangeas, but few can compare to the temple grounds of Akita's Unsho-ji. Located out on the prefecture's rural Oga Peninsula, Unsho-ji is one of those well-kept secrets that only those in the know are really aware of. While it's truly a commitment to get to in comparison to popular spots like Kamakura’s Meigetsu-in, Unsho-ji is definitely worth the effort for hydrangea lovers. And, due to being located much further north, you can see Unsho-ji's vibrantly blue flowers long after the ones in and around Tokyo start to wither. If you make it up here, just be sure to also drop by the Namahage Museum, which is found just a stone’s throw away from Unsho-ji and tells the tale of these fearsome beings. These benevolent but frightening deities are said to come down from the mountains on New Year’s Eve and scare the lazy no-goods into getting their act together. Also, if you have a rental car, there are a number of other locales out there on the Oga Peninsula, such as the Godzilla-shaped rock formation, that are worth seeing. Add this amazing hidden gem to your next Japan travel itinerary and skip the crazy crowds that you'll find down in Kamakura!
