Love it, but part of modern job application is often rekeying your CV into their HR system which explicitly asks for calendar years and months

I tried it! And I literally got the next job I applied for. Admittedly, it wasn't in a very competitive field, but I still think it helped. I have a BUNCH of gaps in my CV which I was struggling to explain, and this tip helped massively.

I wonder if this is different in different industries, locales, or levels.

This is fine for CV's but most jobs that you fill in application for online you have to select dates.

hell yeah that's so good! That bar chart is killing me though, not a clear way of displaying those numbers and the difference (but that's perhaps a but petty of me)

Apparently the reason HR managers were trained to flag or reject people with resume gaps was because it might mean someone had been in prison especially in the days before Google and when it was harder to do background checks .. so it’s kind of outdated now because they can just do a DBS

as an interviewer, i hate doing the math, so listing years saves me time, makes me like them.

I did that last time because I'm a contractor and there can be short gaps, but I didn't realise i was a pioneer! Ooh, pioneer; I'll add that to the CV.

Career gaps are the candidate’s personal business, not mine. I only care if they are good at the job and talk about their ex-colleagues with respect. (I have interviewed well over 1000 candidates in my career and reviewed thousands more CVs)

What about the lengths though? 100 jobs you spent 3 months doing? Or three jobs you spent 10 years doing? That’s going to matter right? Also the job you’re applying for… some will want someone who is going to stay forever, others won’t mind you being there for 18 months

Unfortunately will not work with education jobs where every month from leaving school to the current day must be explained under the safer recruitment requirements. But I wonder whether the explained vs unexplained gaps in education applications makes a difference in callbacks in a way that they don’t in this study?

So interesting! I’ve never heard or seen people just do years but it’s a great idea

One of the reasons schools don't accept CVs is how easy it is to hide gaps. Safer recruitment policies mean gaps have to be scrutinised to check there isn't a safeguarding risk.

I still don't really understand why a gap in your employment history is such a serious thing to recruiters. This study seems to imply it's not a huge deal. The difference between gap and no gap here was ~30% to 38%. Significant, but still a decent response rate for the gappy CVs.

I was a recruiter for 25 years. The explained gap is what I looked for.

If I need to write a new CV in future I'll definitely be asking chat gpt to 'imagine you're an academic who has trialled different CV style changes and how they effect the call back rate'

I've heard that only going back 10 years employment history on your CV gets you called back. Also education without dates. If you're Gen X looking for a job, your age can be easily calculated and hence no call back for "older" candidates. Hiring mgrs are around 35 and dont want to hire people older/more experienced than themselves!
