Clark Gable stood up for black actors which was a no-no back then. So, saying someone was black was a way to destroy them. And Carol Channing wasn't fooling anyone. My mother told us about her in the 60s.

Thank you for explaining to folk… How these rumors take wing and fly without a shred of proof, especially about Hollywood’s golden era of classic films, is infuriating to me. I’ve enjoyed this era of film since my mother engendered them in my affection as a child.

love hearing these stories of Clark Gable. I hadn't heard about the restrooms but have always known about what he said to Hattie McDaniel. kind of reminds me of his character in the movie, he always had a soft spot for her character and made sure to get her that red petticoat lol

I think Clark Gable was accused of being white passing because he was nice to Black people. Black folks probably thought that no white man would be that nice to Black people unless they had some black in them .

I wonder if this rumor persists because of the novel GWTW. There’s a constant reference to Rhett as “swarthy” suggesting something non-white in his lineage

People don’t realise that the majority of Germans are not blond and blue eyed, especially not in South and South-West Germany . Dark to black hair and brown eyes are common, some even tan nicely without turning lobster red like people from the British Isles and Scandinavia.

The room came from him having a strong belief in racial equality and fair treatment throughout his career. Racist thought the way they can undermine any white person is by saying they actually had black ancestry. Very sad.

Clark Gable’s fake teeth made him nauseating to kiss, they say. Hattie McDaniel wanted to be buried at the Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery. Whites only. She was instead the first black in Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery.
