You keep moving. Our first house sit in England was on a farm in Hathersage. A village of maybe two thousand people. In the middle of the Derbyshire countryside. The kind of place that in America would have had me on high alert the second we pulled in. We walked into town. A fruit stand on the main street was blasting Stormzy. A group of Rastafarian men walked through the town centre and nobody looked twice. Nobody looked twice at us either. I stood there for a moment and just tried to figure out what I was feeling. It took me a while to name it. It was the absence of something. The absence of the low hum I had carried for thirty-seven years without realising how loud it was. My girls ran ahead down the street.
