@cogito.rebellion: part 395 | you are a dream the universe is having. the sentence before it sets the stage. every time a man is begotten and born the clock of human life is wound up anew, to repeat once more its same old tune that has already been played innumerable times, movement by movement and measure by measure, with insignificant variations. schopenhauer is not being cruel here. he is being precise. the will, his name for the blind, endless force that drives all existence, does not invest in individuals. it sketches them playfully on its infinite page, space and time, allows them to exist for a short while that is infinitesimal compared with these, and then effaces them to make new room. the word playfully is the one that cuts deepest. not deliberately. not maliciously. playfully. your life is a doodle. this is the heart of schopenhauer’s pessimism, and it is also, strangely, one of the most liberating things he ever wrote. if you are a fleeting form sketched by nature on an infinite page, then the weight you have been assigning to your particular anxieties, your particular failures, your particular standing in the eyes of particular people, is radically disproportionate to what you actually are. a short dream. a brief variation on a tune played innumerable times. what does not follow from this is nihilism. schopenhauer spends the rest of the world as will and representation arguing that art, compassion, and the denial of the will are the only meaningful responses to this condition. not because they change what we are, but because they are the only activities that briefly lift us out of the will’s blind service and into something that resembles clarity. who was schopenhauer? arthur schopenhauer was born in danzig in 1788. the world as will and representation was published in 1818 when he was 30. it was almost entirely ignored. he spent the next three decades in frankfurt, largely alone, walking daily with his poodle, waiting. parerga and paralipomena, published in 1851, finally brought him recognition. he died in 1860, aged 72, alone at his breakfast table, having been right about almost everything and acknowledged for almost none of it until the very end. #schopenhauer #philosophy #darkacademiaaesthetic #existentialism #dailyquotes

Schopenhauer nails it. His love for animals (poodles) and art showed his compassion
