Thomas Sankara was a revolutionary officer and leader from Burkina Faso who took power in 1983 at the age of 33. He sought to transform his country by fighting poverty, corruption, and dependence on foreign powers. He renamed Upper Volta in Burkina Faso, launched vaccination campaigns, promoted education, defended women's rights, and encouraged economic self-sufficiency. Admired by many for his integrity and patriotism, but criticized by some for the authoritarian nature of his regime, he was assassinated in a coup in 1987 led by his former political comrade Blaise Compaoré. Today, he remains one of the most emblematic figures in African political history.
