It’s a drama about guilt & paranoia rather than a real crime investigation thriller. The protagonist boy deliberately attacks the younger boy, after the younger boy’s father shoots the protagonist’s dog. (It was to put him down after the dog got injured but the protagonist boy didn’t know that) and after the younger boy’s older sister (who he had a crush on) kisses another boy. The movie is about the investigation & the stress on the boy & how it shapes him. First in the immediate aftermath, and the cuts forward to when he’s an adult. As an adult he wants to leave France to work in Egypt as a doctor. The town doctor wants him to stay & take over so he can retire. He hooks up with a woman (the now adult sister of the younger boy that he killed) and gets her pregnant. He wants her to abort the baby. Due to real estate development, the ground is being dug up & the body is found along with DNA not matching the adult suspects so police re open the case. The town doctor reveals to the protagonist that he knew about his connection to the boy he killed, and another man gives him the watch that he had found that tied him to the crime. This de facto forces him to remain in town, take over as doctor, and marry the girl. Now he’s living a life he didn’t want & isn’t happy with and it’s supposed to be a metaphor for not being able to escape guilt and its consequences.
