Same reason the boat sinks when it’s on its end or water enters the boat. Go back to being a kid. Play with a boat in the tub. You’ll learn buoyancy. Buoyancy and gravity are different. Gravity keeps you from floating off.

Water will hold heavy things if spread out over the surface of the mass. Just like a foot on snow compared to a snow shoe on snow. Same weight but more weight displacement with the snow show

Gravity does not exist . But this is mot an ideal comparison. Imagine placing a large really large steel bowl or plastic bowl with high “sides” if the weight of the bowl was not enough to outweigh the support of the water,the water would run over the edge and the item would sink. So bouyancy amd displacement are real relative to the density of the water and the size/shape/weight if the floating object,so a small sewing needle would also sink because there is no surface area for the water to support even thi the needle is very light,
