I always thought the dads wand was bad on purpose so he’d chose some other magical interest (herbology) so that Neville could find a cure for his parents using plants

same with Ron. he struggled more in 1st year and was using Charlie's old wand. I think people don't think about because he breaks his wand 2nd year and doesn't get a new one until 3rd so people just were happy he got a new wand.
