Usually less than 1HP motor, I check through multimeter, phase to phase, and phase to ground. But, bigger motor always checked though meggameter.

Do both. Not just one or the other. Any qualified electrician would know this. I’ve megged motors that megged great but once checking continuity found open windings. It’s not one or the other, it’s both. Verify and re-verify.

insulation resistance on a motor should be tested at 1000VDC.

Do both. You can find a bad motor with a meter 95% of the time. All the windings should show the same resistance relatively. If you’re seeing 3.5 3.5 and 1.2 the motor is bad. No megger needed. Always check for a short then check between windings. Also Meg to 1000 volts not 500. Infinite resistance is what you want.

a meg injects the required amount of volts to read a better value find a fault as a dmm doesn't is wil only read a risatance that already there

What is the average? On this one 0.16 less than 1 mega ohm, with 250v . Looks lime you are working on a 480. Can you explain on an AC compressor 208/230 single phase what should be my minimum average readings?

on some insulated wires, the manufacturer will says amything over 2 megaphms is a pass. so its good to know what's a pass and fail for your wire

When your using a fluke megger I always connect the lead ends together and hit test then separate the leads and hit test. I’ve been bit before with a bad lead

Don’t use a standard meter. You need a milli or micro ohm meter. Resistive imbalance should be less than 8%.

Espresso tech here. Nice to see this used in another application. I use my megger to test if heating elements are about to pop when I can't depend on the continuity test.

Whats the minimum Meg-ohms you decide that a motor can not be run?

why do you have twist nuts in junction box and not brass studs/links like in uk

Sometimes that extra force will show a weak insulator that don’t show up with a 9v battery.

Ohming out the motor Checks the integrity of the winding, Megging the motor checks the integrity of the insulation of the windings

The same as pressure testing a hose. 5 psi, i.e. continuity, no leak. but 220-480psi, i.e. the megger, hey there's pinhole leaks !

Megger can tell you when windings are starting to fail. Putting higher voltage into the winding shows when they are getting weak not just shorted to ground

what we sometimes do is connect a phase to the windings and slightly touch another phase to the body of motor to see if it sparks. It works most times for me. Dont try if you are not experienced 😊
