In 1992, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured an image of the Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as M51, located 31 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. At its very center, NASA observed a dark cross-shaped structure of dust silhouetted against the bright galactic core. The Whirlpool Galaxy is one of the most famous and most studied galaxies in the night sky. Discovered by Charles Messier in 1773, it was the first galaxy in which the spiral structure of galaxies was ever observed, by Lord Rosse in 1845. It has been called the Whirlpool because of its perfect, sweeping spiral arms. At the center of it all, a cross. Scripture says of Christ: "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." All that exists, from the smallest atom to the most distant galaxy, was made through him and for him. The cross is not only the sign of his sacrifice. It is the sign of his sovereignty over all creation. Christ is not only King of the Earth. He is King of the Universe. ✝️
