@kalabaritv: Democracy Day Protest: Chetam Nwala Urges Gov Fubara to Focus on Governance, Demands Accountability Prominent human rights lawyer and activist, Barrister Chetam Nwala, on Thursday led a Democracy Day protest march to the Rivers State Government House, where he criticized the performance of political leaders at both the state and federal levels. The protest, which attracted supporters and civil society activists, featured chants calling for greater accountability from public office holders. Demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing them of failing to address the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians. Addressing protesters during the march, Nwala alleged that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had disappointed many Rivers residents who supported him during the state's prolonged political crisis. According to the activist, supporters expected the governor to emerge from the crisis with renewed commitment to governance, development and improved welfare for citizens. Nwala argued that the administration has not met those expectations, claiming that governance and development initiatives have not received sufficient attention. He further alleged that political interests continue to dominate public discourse in the state. The activist also claimed that the political influence of former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, remains significant in the state's affairs. According to him, Rivers State has not fully realized its developmental potential despite its economic importance and abundant resources. Speaking at the Government House, Nwala challenged Governor Fubara to dedicate the remainder of his tenure to delivering projects and policies that directly benefit residents. "You have one more year to go. Work for Rivers people. The people who stood behind you expected more. Governance must return to the center of leadership," he stated. The protest also highlighted concerns over economic hardship, governance and democratic accountability across the country, with participants calling for reforms and improved service delivery from elected officials. The Democracy Day demonstration adds to ongoing political discussions in Rivers State and Nigeria, as citizens and stakeholders continue to evaluate the performance of leaders and the future of democratic governance.
