Deep in the heart of the Pokot village in Kenya, life flows with the rhythm of tradition. Our days begin early—by 5:50 a.m., women are already milking cows as the sun rises. Using ancient methods passed down from our ancestors, we ferment fresh cow milk in beautifully crafted gourds, a natural vessel that preserves and enriches the milk. Gourds are not just containers they are symbols of culture, sustainability, and connection to nature. After four days of fermentation, we shake the gourd for over an hour to produce rich, creamy butter. From this, we use the buttermilk to prepare homemade scones, mixing it with butter and fresh eggs from our chickens.The breakfast is shared with family, neighbors, and children because in our community, food and love are always shared. As Christmas approaches, our entire village is alive with excitement. Everyone is decorating their homes, applying fresh mud to the walls, replacing thatched roofs, and drawing beautiful patterns and flowers.
