@bygonewardrobes: It’s impossible to fit all the nuances into a video like this, bcs it's a rabbit hole... 🐇 This is an old costume and I would like to fix or redo some aspects of it, but I hope it can work as a visual aid to what could have been possible for a housemaid who worked in a more upper class setting in 18th century Finland. Peasant clothing is pretty well studied and there are several pieces in museum collections. But other working class peoples dress needs more research. Unfortunately, the studies concerning this subject are in Finnish or Swedish. I don't think there are any translations of the ones I used back when I sewed this vest-bodice and skirt combination. If you want to browse Finnish collections online, use www.finna.fi and terms "liivi", "naisten liivi" for vests and "hame" for skirts www.digitaltmuseum.org is great for Swedish and Norwegian collections. 👗 Chemises, petticoats, vest-bodice, cap and apron sewn by me Handkerchief: @burnleyandtrowbridge Shoes: @americanduchess Can’t remember where I got the buckles #fashionhistory #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #historicaldress #historicalcostuming

I was just taking a look at my American girl doll Kirsten, and this print and style reminds me so much of her dirndl outfit!

i like when fashion historians talk about middle and lower class people, most of us would fall into those categories so it's interesting to see what we could've worn in different time periods. it's also useful if you like creating historical original characters!

oh so that would be just like jumps! it's pretty much the exact same things w/ slightly different construction. it's worn on the outside and has no boning, a difference is that it was quilted normally for structure and the way it was tied was a bit different

This is very interesting. I enjoy seeing historical styles from countries other than those I’m familiar with such as Britain and North America.

I love this! My paternal grandfather was a Finnish Swede (his family was from Norbotten and Vasterbotten), and came from a working class family. It’s interesting to see clothing that may have been worn there.
