Yeah, we get this alot from the Jewish community in South Africa. Furthermore if youre Jewish and you support a Free Palestine, they get called Capos.

I like to explain differentiating between people and institutions, we condemn the institutions of Israel and we stand with the People of Palestine....a big problem in the west with a lack of personal identity is that oftentimes you can be critiquing an institution for example the patriarchy and individuals who have taken on the identity of man will take it as a personal attack because their identity is hinged on the institution...but I find any argument that targets the institution while holding space for the person is stronger than one that puts person against person in defense of any institution.

It is useful to ask them "tell me about the Congo, then", because it will lead to two outcomes. First, they can't and it falls apart quickly. Second, they can, as in they got informed to use it as a counter argument, allowing you to question "so you CAN recognize a wrong, you just chose not to"

This is why "what about USA crimes" will always be valid. It's pointing out the hypocrisy of people critiquing or spreading propaganda against leftist (arguably communist) countries or groups, but not doing the same for one of the most oppressive imperial countries in modern history.

is it also what aboutism to ask why this creator isn't making videos about how his clothing is made by slaves in asia? many people lack the self awareness to realize that they care a lot more about feeling superior than they do about the issues

put another way "you too" arguments are never about refuting the claim. they're about changing the frame of what should be given attention. In the punching down examples, this is about avoiding responsibility and maintaining privilege, not about a serious attempt at moral evaluation

So-called Whataboutism is often just “controlling the frame of a discussion”.

I’m not sure the language of punching up/down is the distinction that’s really important, but rather the question “is your commitment for addressing this specific instance of wrongdoing contains in it (in a non coincidental and some important way) disregard for other cases?

You can perfectly condemn all wrong doings. There's no need to excuse any of it. This is not in favor of downgrading the bigger wrongdoing.

If you can give the response, “Yes, that’s bad too. So what?” then they probably have not made a valid argument.

My question to Zios is “Do you accept that a Palestinian life is worth the same as a Jewish Israel life?” - they will never answer it, because it immediately highlights their racism.
